Children’s MassHealth: How Does It Work?

MassHealth stands for the Massachusetts Department of Health and Human Services and is a state-funded program that provides affordable dental and orthodontic care to families living in Massachusetts. There are many MassHealth plans with varying levels of coverage, including MassHealth Standard, MassHealth CommonHealth, MassHealth CarePlus, and MassHealth Family Assistance.
To be eligible for MassHealth, you must meet certain requirements. After submitting the application, you must be financially eligible for an available plan, be a state resident, be a U.S. citizen or have verified immigration status, and your child must be under the age of 21.
Dental Services Covered Under MassHealth Plans

While enrolled in a MassHealth plan, your child will gain access to a wide range of dental services, many of which can prevent the need for costly care down the road. These include things like:
- Routine checkups and cleanings
- Dental fillings
- Dental crowns
- Fluoride treatment
- Tooth extractions
- Metal braces
- Oral surgery
- Root canal treatment/Pulp therapy
- Dental sealants
- Space maintainers
- X-rays
Prevention Is the Key to Keeping Your Child’s Smile Healthy

As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure—and when it comes to your child’s teeth, this is absolutely true. The best thing you can do for your child’s teeth and gums is to ensure that they’re keeping up with their routine checkups and cleanings every six months. Not only does this allow our team to identify problems early on, before they risk worsening into serious and costly issues, but we can also help to educate your child about at-home hygiene habits. Combined with daily brushing and flossing, routine preventive care can go an incredibly long way towards preventing cavities, thwarting gum disease, and keeping their dental development right on track.
All of that said, using your MassHealth benefits to cover the cost of your child’s dental care will make prevention even easier, so don’t wait to contact us and schedule their next appointment!
