How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance is designed with one main goal in mind: keeping your child's smile healthy before small problems have a chance to become big ones. Most plans are built around a prevention-first model, which means that routine care, like checkups, cleanings, and X-rays, is typically covered at the highest level, often at little to no cost to you. From there, coverage usually steps down for more involved treatments. A common structure looks like this:
- Preventive care (exams, cleanings, X-rays) – covered at 80–100%.
- Basic restorative care (fillings, simple extractions) – covered at around 70–80%.
- Major restorative care (crowns, more complex procedures) – covered at around 50%.
In addition to monthly premiums, most plans also come with an annual maximum, which is the total amount your insurance will pay out in a given year, as well as a deductible, which is what you must pay out of pocket before your benefits kick in.
What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

Dental and medical insurance share some similarities but work quite differently. Medical insurance is built primarily to help you deal with unexpected health events: an illness, an injury, or a surgery. You generally can't predict when you'll need it, which is why the emphasis is on coverage for the unexpected.
Dental insurance, on the other hand, is built around prevention. Rather than waiting for problems to arise, dental plans are designed to encourage you to come in regularly so that issues can be caught and addressed early, before they become costly or complicated. This is why preventive services are covered so generously!
In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

When a dental practice is "in-network" with your insurance provider, it means the office has agreed to a set of contracted fees with that carrier. The insurance company covers a portion of those agreed-upon rates, which usually means lower out-of-pocket costs for you! We're proud to be in-network with a wide range of major insurance plans, including:
- MassHealth
- Humana
- Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS)
- Aetna PPO
- Delta Dental PPO
- Delta Dental MA Premier
- MetLife
- Guardian
Don't see your plan on the list? Don't worry! Even if we're out-of-network with your provider, we're still happy to work with you. We'll review your benefits, let you know what to expect, and do everything we can to help make your child's dental care as affordable as possible.
