The Sunshine Vitamin: How Playing Outside Can Benefit Your Child’s Smile

Summer is here, which means it’s time for outdoor adventures, backyard fun, and soaking up the sunshine—especially for kids! But did you know that spending a little time in the sun isn’t just great for making memories? It can also greatly benefit your child’s oral health! Read on to find out why getting outside this summer might be one of the best things your child can do for their oral health!

It’s All About Vitamin D

You’ve probably heard that kids need calcium for strong bones and teeth. But without vitamin D, the benefits of calcium don’t go as far! Calcium needs vitamin D in order to be absorbed properly and completely, so your child’s body can actually use it.  Vitamin D is sometimes called the “sunshine vitamin” because our bodies produce it when exposed to sunlight, making outdoor playtime extra valuable for growing kids!

Furthermore, research also shows a positive correlation between vitamin D and the prevention of tooth decay. Plus, vitamin D can also support the immune system and help it function properly. It’s safe to say it’s one of the most important vitamins that anybody—young or old—needs.

Ensure That Your Child Gets Plenty of Vitamin D This Summer

Above all else, getting plenty of sunshine is the best way for your child to fill their vitamin D levels. Most researchers agree that anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes of sunshine a day is all it takes. Just be sure that your child is wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated while playing outside, to prevent other risks like skin cancer, dehydration, or heat exhaustion.

Of course, for days when playing outside isn’t an option, there are still other ways to ensure your child is getting the vitamin D their smile needs to thrive! For instance, some foods that are good sources of vitamin D include:

  • Fatty fish, including salmon and tuna
  • Orange juice and milk
  • Eggs, fortified cereal, and yogurt

It’s also worth mentioning that sunshine and vitamin D work best alongside good brushing habits and regular dental checkups. That said, don’t hesitate to talk to your child’s dental team to make sure their smile is getting everything it needs to shine all year long!
